Engr 1201: Introduction to Engineering
Objectives
This course is an introduction to the engineering
profession with emphasis on technical communication and team-based
engineering design.
At the end of this
course, students should be able to answer the questions:
- What are the
different branches of engineering, and which one(s) are the most appealing to
me?
- What does an
engineer do?
- How can I be
a successful engineering student and ultimately a successful engineer?
- What kind of
technical work can I expect to do as an engineer?
And most
importantly,
- Do I really
want to be an engineer?
We'll focus on many competency areas.
Specifically, upon successful completion of this course, students will be able
to:
- Articulate the engineering profession and
engineering ethics, including professional practice and licensure
- Use technical communication skills to
explain the analysis and results of introductory laboratory exercises in
engineering and computer science.
- Explain the engineering analysis and design
process.
- Analyze data collected during laboratory
exercises.
- Articulate the impact engineering has had
on the modern world.
- As part of a team, design a simple
engineering device, write a design report, and present the design.
- Demonstrate computer literacy.
The course is divided into four units, each
focusing on a specific area:
- Unit 1: Getting Started in Engineering
- Unit 2: Essential Math & Lab Skills
- Unit 3: Essential Engineering Skills
- Unit 4: Solving Problems and Presenting
Results

to access those materials. Even if Blackboard isn't working, you are
still responsible to turn in all assignments and projects on time!
